Arizona TV Station Update - October 2023

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

New Licenses

  • KVCW 33.x (29) Las Vegas NV (KUPN Licensee LLC) requested and has been granted a license to cover its construction permit to reduce the power of its auxiliary broadcast facility at its primary distributed transmission site, DTS-1, from 164 kW to 57.14 kW.

Programming Changes

  • KRGX-LD 19.x Gila River Indian Co (Gila River Telecommunications Inc.) is back on the air. Channel 19.1 is once again airing FNX, but now it is the only subchannel.
  • KDVD-LD 50.x (25) Globe (Globe LPTV LLC) has dropped infomercials on channel 50.5 for a slide recommending viewers to scan for updated channels, the same slide that appears on channel 50.3.
  • KVCW 33.x (29) Las Vegas NV (KUPN Licensee LLC) has replaced Stadium on channel 33.5 with The Nest. The diginet will actually air as a subchannel of KLAS-TV (RF7), as KVCW is serving as the ATSC 3.0 lighthouse for Las Vegas.
  • KDNU-LD 7.x (30) Las Vegas NV (Bridge News LLC) is identified on the Bridge News website as airing NewsNet on channel 7.1, Sports News Highlights on channel 7.2, The Grio on channel 7.3, ACE on channel 7.4, and ShopHQ infomercials on channel 7.5.
  • KMSQ-LD 15.x Mesquite NV (Bridge News LLC) is identified on the Bridge News website as airing NewsNet on channel 15.1, Sports News Highlights on channel 15.2, The Grio on channel 15.3, and ACE on channel 15.4.

Transactions

  • The FCC has approved the purchase of KVPA-LD 42.x (34) Phoenix (Estrella Television Licensee LLC) by Bridge News LLC. Consummation could occur as soon as during the first week of November. It is very likely that Bridge News will place NewsNet on channel 42.1, Sport News Highlights on channel 42.2, and ShopHQ on another subchannel. The Las Vegas NV and Mesquite NV stations air The Grio on the .3 subchannel and ACE on the .4 subchannel, but both diginets are already seen in Phoenix.

Construction Permits, Tolling, and STAs Granted

  • KGRX-LD 19.x Gila River Indian Co (Gila River Telecommunications Inc.) has been granted a Silence STA.
  • KGRY-LD 28.x Gila River Indian Co (Gila River Telecommunications Inc.) has been granted a Silence STA.
  • KVCW 33.x (29) Las Vegas NV (KUPN LIcensee LLC) has been granted a Legal STA, allowing it to replace Stadium with The Nest as one of the networks specified as being broadcast on KLAS-TV in ATSC 1.0 format.

Construction Permits, Tolling, and STAs Requested

  • KSNV 3.x (22) Las Vegas NV (KUPN Licensee LLC) has requested an Experimental STA to allow it to temporarily broadcast an ATSC 3.0 signal on UHF channel 33 during the Consumer Electronics Show January 9 - 12 and the National Association of Broadcasters show April 14 - 17. Authorization requested is to operate from January 2 - January 13, and April 7 - April 18. KSNV plans to use the exact same facilities as it has for past shows. Technical specifications: Ch 33; TL 36° 0' 27" N, 115° 0' 27" W (Black Mtn.); ERP 42 kW H / Unknown V DA 1.05° EBT; HAAT 374 m / 1,227 ft.
  • KGNG-LD 26.x Las Vegas NV (King Kong Broadcasting Inc.) has requested displacement due to KTNV-TV being granted its rulemaking request to substitute UHF channel 26 for VHF channel 13 in the Las Vegas allotment table. KGNG is looking to take over KTNV's old frequency. Technical specifications: Ch 13; TL 35° 56' 46" N, 115° 2' 37" W (Arden Peak); ERP 3 kW DA HP; HAAT 548 m / 1,797 ft.

Requests for Rulemaking

  • KTNV-TV 13.x Las Vegas NV (Scripps Broadcasting Holdings LLC) has been granted its rulemaking request, changing the allotment for Las Vegas from VHF channel 13 to UHF channel 26. Scripps now needs to file an application for a channel change.

Expired, Expiring, Canceled and Dismissed

  • The contract for KPHO-TV to air ShopLC expires at the end of November. Will KPHO continue to air ShopLC on a month-to-month basis? Will they replace ShopLC with TBD? KPHO has had a contract in place to air TBD since the beginning of the year, but has never aired the diginet.
  • The original construction permit for K14SL-D Roll (Landover 2 LLC) expired October 26. Look for the FCC to cancel the permit shortly.

License Renewals

The FCC has renewed the licenses of the following television stations until October 1, 2030:

  • KDTP 11.x Holbrook (Community Television Educators Inc.), after a minor modification was made to its license renewal application.
  • KPCE-LD 29.x Tucson (Word of God Fellowship Inc.)
  • KDPH-LD 48.x (13) Phoenix (Word of God Fellowship Inc.)
  • KLVD-LD 23.x Las Vegas NV (Word of GOd Fellowship Inc.)

I was able to get a read on Flagstaff's newest station, KAZF. It has only one subchannel, channel 32.1, which carries the same programming as channel 44.1 in Phoenix.

Started catching up on watching recorded OTA TV after the holiday and I noticed that CW 61.1 has gone independent (now called "Arizona 61") and The CW has moved to KNXV 15.2 apparently sharing programming time with Antenna TV. Don't know how this affects cable or satellite locals since I don't subscribe to either.

Word is that channel 61.1, which used to be on cable 6 on Cox, is now on channel 95, and channel 15.2 is now on channel 6, so CW programming remains on Cox cable channel 6.
