Arizona TV Station Update - January 2011

A busy start for the new year.

New licenses

  • KOLD-TV 13.x Tucson (KOLD License Subsidiary LLC [Raycom]) applied for and was granted a license to cover its replacement translator construction permit. The translator serves parts of northwest Tucson, Casas Adobes, Marana and Oro Valley blocked from the main ch 32 signal by Mt. Lemmon. Technical specifications: Ch 13; TL 32-14-57 N, 111-6-57 W; ERP 0.3 kW non-directional; HAAT 603 m.
  • KTVW-CD 6.x (27) Flagstaff/Doney Park (KTVW License Partnership G.P. [Univision]) has applied for a license to cover its digital flash cut construction permit and move from Mt. Elden to Mormon Mtn. Technical specifications: Ch 27; TL 34-58-6 N, 111-30-34 W; ERP 7.2 kW directional; HAAT 461 m.
  • K25LU-D 10.x Mesquite NV (Clark County School District) has been granted a license to cover its construction permit. Technical specifications: Ch 25; TL 36-49-55 N, 114-3-32 W; ERP 0.515 kW directional; HAAT -62 m. (24 m. AGL).
  • K16DS St. George UT (Southwest Media LLC) has been granted a construction permit to flash cut to digital and has already applied for a license to cover. Technical specifications: Ch 16; TL 37-3-49 N, 113-34-20 W; ERP 0.25 kW non-directional; HAAT 41 m.

Programming changes

  • KOLD-TV 13.x (13 & 32) Tucson (KOLD License Subsidiary LLC [Raycom]) has finally dropped the slide apologizing for no longer carrying The Tube, which went out of business about three years ago. However, the .3 subchannel is still there and it still IDs to PSIP as TUBE.
  • K51HV Cottonwood (Trinity Broadcasting of Arizona) is silent. Although TBN-owned, it is not part of the donation to Minority Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC).
  • K51IO Bullhead City (Trinity Broadcasting Network) is silent, claiming to have been forced off the air by equipment failure on 1/25.

Transactions

  • The FCC has granted TBN's applications to donate stations K38CX Shonto, K41ER Globe/Miami and K51IO Bullhead City to MMTC.

Construction permits and STAs granted

  • KFTU-CA 34 Tucson (Telefutura Partnership of Tucson, LLC) has been granted STA to commence digital operations pending Mexican coordination. As of the end of January, it is not yet operational. The station also has requested to continue broadcasting in analog for an unspecified period of time. Technical specifications: Ch 18; TL 32-24-14 N, 109-56-14 W; ERP 11.9 kW directional; HAAT
  • KTVW-CA 6 Doney Park/Flagstaff (KTVW License Partnership, G.P. [Univision]) applied for and was granted STA to continue to operate its analog channel for 45 days after signing on digital flash cut KTVW-CD 6.x (27) Flagstaff. KTVW-CD signed on January 17, so KTVW-CA can continue operations until March 1.
  • KZOL-LP 15 Safford (KTVW License Partnership LLC [Univision]) has had approved a proposed modification to reduce power by 52% on its 15 kW digital flash cut application. Technical specifications: Ch 16; TL 32-39-1 N, 109-50-53 W; ERP 7.2 kW directional; HAAT 1311 m.
  • KTVP-LP 22 Phoenix (Mako Communications LLC) has requested and was granted STA to commence digital operations pending Mexican coordination of its construction permit. As of the end of January, it is not yet operational. Technical specifications: Ch 22; TL 33-19-58 N, 112-3-59 W; ERP 5 kW directional; HAAT 460 m.
  • K57FY Kingman (Scripps Media, Inc.) was granted a displacement construction permit to flash cut to digital on an in-core channel. When licensed, the new call sign will be K30LL-D. Technical specifications: Ch 30; TL 35-4-57 N, 113-54-13 W; ERP 2 kW directional; HAAT 1085 m.
  • K16FB Globe (Telefutura Partnership of Phoenix [Univision]) has had approved a proposed modification to reduce power by 32% on its 7.5 kW digital flash cut application. Technical specifications: Ch 16; TL 33-17-21 N, 110-45-45 W; ERP 5.1 kW directional; HAAT 995 m.
  • The FCC has approved the transfer of control of KBLR 39.x (40) Las Vegas NV (Telemundo Las Vegas License LLC) from General Electric Company to Comcast Corporation. An application has been filed to consummate the transaction.
  • KELV-LP 27 Las Vegas NV (Entravision Holdings, LLC) requested and was granted a six-month extension of its STA to operate from a location at variance with its license. Technical specifications: Ch 27; TL 36-0-30 N; 115-0-20 W; ERP 43 kW directional; HAAT 323 m.
  • KHDF-CA 19 Las Vegas NV (Una Vez Mas Las Vegas License, LLC) has been granted a construction permit to flash cut to digital. Technical specifications: Ch 19; TL 36-0-37 N, 115-0-20 W; ERP 8 kW directional; HAAT 297 m.
  • KUTG-LP 58 St. George UT (Lamar Veasey) has been granted a displacement construction permit to flash cut to digital on an in-core channel. Technical specifications: Ch 14; TL 37-3-49 N, 113-34-29 W; ERP 1 kW non-directional; HAAT 47 m.
  • K38AU Crownpoint NM (The Navajo Nation) has been granted a construction permit to flash cut to digital and a community of license change to Tohatchi NM. Technical specifications: Ch 38; TL 35-54-37 N, 108-46-26 W; ERP 2.62 kW directional; HAAT 597 m.

  • KFPH-CD 35.x Phoenix (Telefutura Partnership of Phoenix) requested STA to operate at reduced power for 90 days. Technical specifications: Ch 35, TL 33-20-0 N, 112-3-46 W; ERP 7.36 kW directional; HAAT 491 m.
  • K02HR Bullhead City (Mohave County Board of Supervisors) superseded its digital flash cut application with a displacement application, which gets higher priority. K02HR is displaced from channel 2 by KSNV Las Vegas NV. Technical specifications: Ch 3; TL 35-12-46 N, 114-33-18 W; ERP 1 W; HAAT -179 m (6 m AGL).
  • K09KG Bullhead City (Mohave County Board of Supervisors) superseded its digital flash cut application with a displacement application, which gets higher priority. K09KG is displaced from channel 9 by KVVU Henderson NV. Technical specifications: Ch 8; TL 35-12-46 N, 114-33-18 W; ERP 2 W; HAAT -179 m (6 m AGL).
  • K11LX Bullhead City (Mohave County Board of Supervisors) superseded its digital flash cut application with a displacement application, which gets higher priority. K11LX is displaced from channel 11 by KLVX Las Vegas NV. Technical specifications: Ch 5; TL 35-12-46 N, 114-33-18 W; ERP 2 W; HAAT -179 m (6 m AGL).
  • Gila River Telecommunications, Inc. has modified its applications for new Lone Butte-based stations, to include tower registration and FAA approval. The proposed towers would be within 5 miles of Stellar Airpark in Chandler.
  • KNJO-LD 6.x (15) Holbrook (KM Communications, LLC) has requested a third extension of it construction permit. The FCC has not approved it. The station's last construction permit extension expired on January 12.
  • KWKM-LD 10.x (13) Show Low (KM Communications, LLC) has requested a third extension of it construction permit. The FCC has not approved it. The station's last construction permit extension expired on January 12.
  • KWSJ-LD 12.x (9) Snowflake (KM Communications, LLC) has requested a third extension of it construction permit. The FCC has not approved it. The station's last construction permit extension expired on January 12.
  • K53IJ Peeples Valley (KVFW-TV LLC) has filed an application to switch its analog signal from a directional pattern to non-directional, to slightly lower its ERP from 10 kW to 9.99 kW (to avoid Mexican coordination) and to change community of license from Peeples Valley to Rock Springs. The application does not supersede the station's request to flash cut to digital. Technical specifications: Ch 53; TL 34-13-58 N, 112-22-13 W; ERP 9.99 kW non-directional; HAAT 784 m.
  • Hispanic Christian Community Network has filed an application to operate a low-power digital companion channel to analog K30IP Littlefield. Technical specifications: Ch 51; TL 36-36-14 N, 114-6-9 W; ERP 15 kW non-directional; HAAT 937 m.

Canceled, Dismissed, Expired or Expiring

  • The FCC has canceled the license of KBBA-LP 10 Lake Havasu City (Smoke and Mirrors, LLC) for failure to transmit within a one-year period.
  • The FCC has dismissed the silent STA application for K41ER Globe/Miami (Trinity Broadcasting Network).
  • The FCC has dismissed the silent STA application for K51IO Bullhead City (Trinity Broadcasting Network).
