Tuners Perfect for TSReader Now $20 on eBay

Just thought I'd post this for anyone who's maybe been interested in toying with TSReader but never had the hardware to do so. This chip in this receiver is certainly not the best ever made, but it's very adequate for receiving local TV stations.

If you do buy one, I'd love to receive updated TSReader data from you. =)

FCC Publishes Technical Paper on Broadband Plan

Here's a PDF link to the document in question.

It spends a lot of time discussing the various methods of "reclaiming spectrum" and actually dismisses a number of methods the FCC had previously pushed as ways of doing it. The most interesting part to me is a note that WBOC plans to begin running dual HD "in the second quarter." That quarter will be ending in a mere two weeks.

KSCE Files to Return Analog 38 to Air

From the "The Stupidity Hurts" department this week, we have KSCE in El Paso, who wants to light up their analog 38 signal once again. See the documentation here.

Basically, they are arguing that lots of analog sets still exist in the market and that the drug war in Mexico is reason enough to warrant lighting up their analog signal to... broadcast religion. However, what the station is failing to note is that full-service analog transmission is now banned by federal law. If the FCC was to approve such a filing, it would be in direct violation of the law to do so.

Unless I'm completely missing something here, or they petition to have federal law changed, I forsee this one is going straight in the bin.

KHLM-LD 43 Seeks Experimental Power Increase

An interesting filing was submitted to the FCC yesterday. Station KHLM-LD 43 in Houston, TX transitioned to digital around the same time as the full service stations did. However, it received many reception complaints and has now asked the FCC for experimental authority to operate at 60 kW rather than the 15 kW specified in their license. It will be interesting to see if the FCC approves.

Click here to see the filing.
