Apologies

I would like to apologize for the extended site outage today. It went down right after I left the office for a task at a remote location, and then I was away from my computer for 9 hours and did not notice.

Should something like this happen in the future and last more than 15 minutes, please send me e-mail. I now have a phone that will receive such things, and I can remotely reboot the server if necessary.

Interesting Spectrum Tool

Given all the recent uncertainly surrounding spectrum auctions, like many others I have been following articles on the issue as best I can. In an Ars Technica article over the weekend comparing the Verizon spectrum buys to the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, a commenter ("doormat") noted he had quickly created a mapping tool to display where the various cell phone companies and other major groups held spectrum. He compared it to the FCC's spectrum dashboard but I think it's better than the FCC's work.

It is rough around the edges, but I found it to be very useful nonetheless. Have a look.

IBOC Oddity

This is somewhat off-subject, but I'm so thoroughly amused.

My preferred AM/FM radio is my Sony XDR-S3HD. I currently have it hooked to my outdoor TV antenna, which is technically too small for proper FM use. But it definitely works for me, bringing me quite a number of FM stations.

What has me laughing is the fact that if I tune to 96.1, I hear a local translator that sounds pretty clear for about 5 seconds before the IBOC of WKLS-FM Atlanta kicks in. The WKLS IBOC feed is the only reliable Atlanta IBOC feed, with the others fading in and out, but I have yet to hear the analog of WKLS.

On a semi-related note, the big Chattanooga FMs from Signal Mountain, like WDEF, WDOD, and WSKZ, are all getting eaten by multipath, thus confirming my issues with the TV side of things to be caused by multipath.

The Big Announcement

Yes, it has finally happened, I have gained employment. On November 8, I moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and on November 14, I began working for Luken Communications, parent company of networks RTV, Tuff TV, My Family TV, PBJ, Frost Great Outdoors (FGO), My Car TV, The Nashville Network (TNN), and more networks to come. I am working in a dual role at the company, in both affiliate relations and engineering. One of my main tasks will be dealing with the chain of LPTV stations recently purchased from Trinity via the MMTC, but it will be one task among many. So far, I am enjoying my work and have high hopes that it will continue to be enjoyable for the forseeable future.

So what does this mean for RabbitEars? It should mean nothing, except that my daytime availability may be limited in terms of answering e-mails. Part of the reason the people at Luken wanted to have me on board was to ensure that I was not discouraged from maintaining RabbitEars by some other potential employer. In addition, my position will require some amount of travel, which will allow me to collect additional data on stations for RabbitEars, potentially improving the site in that manner.

To address the questions that I know are coming, here's the DX Tool page for my new apartment, TVFool for my new apartment, FMFool for my new apartment, and an AVS Forum thread about the issues I'm having. I will post an FM bandscan for my new apartment at some point in the future, though likely not here. No, I cannot tell you what additional networks Luken has in the pipeline. No, I cannot provide a photographic tour of Luken Communications at this time, as I did with the WDBJ studios and transmitter; however, in the future I will see if there would be any way to make such a thing happen.

Should you have any additional questions, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment. Have a pleasant week!

Air TV Floats In

Off and on for several months, people have been observing Nagravision-encrypted subchannels labeled "AirTV" popping up on ION stations for a few hours at a time. It now looks as though the service has launched on several stations, seen on this page.

To see the list of subchannels included, I refer you to dhett's post on Radio-Info.

Informative discussion threads can be found at AVS Forum and the WTFDA Forum.

Further Delays 2

I'm hoping to move this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday. As a result, my availability may be severely limited in the near future. How much so is another question entirely; if I don't have a neighbor with an open router, I may be without Internet access in my apartment until the new service is set up. Of course, if I do have a neighbor with an open router, then I should at least be able to get online. In either case, I'm going to be furniture hunting, trying to deal with opening an account with the local credit union, moving my license and car registration to the new state, unpacking, and other tasks generally associated with moving to a new location.

I got caught up on most of my e-mails, but am already falling behind again as I try to get all packed up and ready to go.

And yes, I still intend to make an announcement about where I'm moving to and who I am working for. I will likely make the announcement once I begin work.

Further Delays

Folks, I have gotten behind on my e-mails the last few days and this will likely continue for a bit. I'm apartment hunting this week and tomorrow will be heading out to do so in person for the rest of the week instead of just on the phone. As you can imagine, all of this will be very time consuming. I hope to get caught up this weekend.

Thanks for your patience and understanding. I promise an update on my situation will be forthcoming. =)
