New Features on RabbitEars

I took a few minutes over the last few days to make some improvements that I've been thinking about all summer but have not had the chance to implement. So here's what to look for:

  • Redesigned the Mobile DTV page to include mobile subchannels. This is to make clear that the full programming available on the main sub is not necessarily available in MH.
  • Fixed the broken screencaps function in the listings. You'll now see screencap links appear under Technical Data. There are 325 available screencaps at this time.
  • Added listings for the "Extended Channel Name" field. If you hover over the call sign in the listings, you'll see the Extended Channel Name if it is used by the station. At present, this only works in the top 56 markets, as I've yet to get through the rest of the data.
  • Added a "widescreen" note for widescreen SD subchannels. Until now, they were listed as "480i" with all the others, now widescreen SD subs will appear as "480i (w)" for clarity.
  • For stations with elliptical or circular polarity, the Technical Data now shows what the vertical power level is, if it is known.
  • In the Technical Data, each filing now links back directly to its FCC application, via the "App" link next to the filing number.

I will gladly accept any comments or suggestions to improve on these functions. I actually had a nifty green background for the active stations on the new Mobile DTV page which matched the orange background for "coming soon" stations, but people were seeing it as significantly darker than it was supposed to be, so I got rid of it. I'm tempted to bring it back, though; I really liked it in that shade of green.

Advertising on RabbitEars

As you may or may not have noticed, I have now posted information about advertising on RabbitEars. You can find it in the boxes at the top of the page, as well as under the Help/Info dropdown above.

Don't let anything on that page scare you away if you're considering. Please e-mail with any questions or concerns and I will get back to you as quickly as I can.

On the other hand, do not feel obligated, either. I offer the tools and information on RabbitEars free of charge and intend to keep it that way. I simply wish to cover costs which may increase and buy some additional gear to further improve the site.

Review: SiliconDust HDHomeRun (HDHR-US)

A few weeks ago, Woot.com had the SiliconDust HDHomeRun available. I'd heard a lot of good things about it and finally decided to jump on it.

Unlike my other reviews, I'm not going to include pictures in this one, because they're really not needed. The device has exactly four connections to hook up (power, network, and two coax) and that's it. Easy as pie.

The software was just as simple, I had to download it, install it, and run it. The included software is extremely straightforward to use and easy to configure. On the Windows side, the setup utility automatically found my device and upgraded its firmware immediately upon launch. I was then able to input my zip code for use with the Lineup Server and quickly scan in my channels to submit to the site.

The real joy comes from the config utility, which runs on both Windows and Linux. It scans for the next active channel, and then shows three different levels. It shows "Signal Strength" which corresponds to actual received power, "Signal Quality" which corresponds to the SNR/MER of the signal, and "Symbol Quality" which corresponds to the bit error rate. Interestingly enough, these three values all correspond directly to values I can pull off my spectrum analyzer, except the tuner in the HDHomeRun is superior to the one in the spectrum analyzer. Once I learn what the exact conversions are, I'll be in good shape.

HDHRConfigLinux

Here's what it says for my local stations from Roanoke/Lynchburg.

StationSignal StrengthSignal QualityNotes
WBRA (3)96%59%Frequent drops in Signal Quality causes drop in Symbol Quality
WSET (13)75%81%
WFXR (17)82%100%
WDBJ (18)80%87%
WWCW (20)93%100%
WSLS (30)73%100%
WPXR (36)62%83%

Once tuned to a given channel, you can then choose a subchannel and then you can view it. On Windows, "QuickTV" opens which has a channel list at the right and shows you the picture. Very nifty. On Linux, VLC opens and it instantly connects. I'm very pleased with both.

The device works well with TSReader, making it ideal for that purpose as well. When you open TSReader and choose the HDHomeRun, it lets you choose which tuner you want to access, and then enter a channel. I'm simply loving being able to have my laptop anywhere in the house and pull up TSReader locally. (I have it running in WINE.)

In the near future, SiliconDust plans to launch the HDHomeRun Prime, which will feature three tuners and support for CableCARD as well as tuning adapters. No support exists for any type of satellite.

This is one product I can definitely recommend, and I'm already considering buying more of them to leave places. It's such an amazing device.

If you want to find them for sale, here's where to look.

Exam Week

Due to this week being exam week, plus I'm moving to a new apartment, plus my roommate is moving to this new apartment, plus my girlfriend breaking up with me, my availability will be severely limited this week, likely until Friday afternoon. Thank you for understanding.

In the morning, I need to give a presentation on my thesis project. Here is mine. (And here's the original ODP.)

New Tool on RabbitEars

In between my schoolwork, I've been spending a lot of time working on a new tool for RabbitEars. A few people have already seen it, but to many others, it will be brand new. Or, very old, depending on how you look at it.

Now located in the Tools menu, or by clicking here, you can now see the RabbitEars TV Query. It is a clone of the FCC's TV Query, but with some more features. Take it for a spin and let me know what you think, both good and bad, as well as what could be improved on it.

And there are definitely more things I'd like to add to it, but I decided I wanted to go ahead and launch it now to get feedback from as many people as possible. So try it out and let me know!

June and July in VHF

Due to my limited time related to summer classes, I've been putting off the typical updates of the VHF Nightmares. That said, it's no major loss, since there have been only four in the last two months. I've brought the page up to date, and here they are:

  • WJLA-7 and WUSA-9 have both filed to make their 52 kW power increases permanent, but with antennas that are now elliptically polarized instead of horizontal.
  • WUOA-6 is licensed for 26 kW and has an STA for 31.5 kW, but has filed for a permanent power increase to 45 kW, the highest power level allowed on low-VHF.
  • KTTC-10 has filed to increase power from 33.7 kW to 43.1 kW.

Nothing too exciting here, but at least now it's up to date once again.

Thesis Prospectus

As many people know, I am a student at UVA, and when the fall semester begins I will be entering my final year. At the University of Virginia, all engineering students are required to complete a fourth year thesis project, which I have now begun. My project will focus on the study of VHF antennas and reception, and yesterday I got my graded prospectus back. I received an A for it, and plan on doing the experimentation some time during the upcoming semester.

So if you are interested, you may read my Thesis Prospectus.

Arizona TV Station Update - June 2010

Another month is in the rear-view mirror, and June 2010 was another busy one. Here is the latest edition of the Arizona TV Station Update, a look at activity during the past month in the state of Arizona and nearby surrounding cities.

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

Menu

I'm sure everyone noticed that I've replaced the huge, tacky menu with a nice neat dropdown menu. Any opinions on the new design?
