Arizona TV Station Update - April 2021

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

New Licenses

  • KEJR-LD 40.x (32) Phoenix (TV-49 Inc.) requested and has been granted a license to cover its construction permit, as amended, allowing it to move higher on its tower, to modify its broadcast pattern, and to change polarization. Technical specifications: Ch 32; TL 33° 19' 57" N, 112° 3' 59" W (South Mtn.); ERP 15 kW H / 10.5 kW V, non-directionak, 1° elec beam tilt; HAAT 483 m (1584 ft).
  • KESE-LD 35.x Yuma (NPG of Yuma-El Centro LLC) requested and has been granted a license to cover its flash cut to digital. Technical specifications: Ch 35; TL 32° 38' 31" N, 114° 33' 37" W (S Ave 4E & E County 14th St); ERP 8 kW H, directional, 0.25° elec beam tilt; HAAT 78 m (256 ft).
  • KVGA-LD 12.x Las Vegas NV (Digital Networks-Southwest LLC) requested and has been granted a license to cover its relocation of broadcast facilities to Arden Peak. Technical specifications: Ch 12; TL 35° 56' 45" N, 115° 2' 37" W (Arden Peak); ERP 2 kW H directional; HAAT 566 m (1856 ft).

Programming Changes

  • Weigel Broadcasting Company has announced that it would be launching MeTV Plus, a second classic television network, on May 15. KMOH 6.x Kingman is slated for the initial OTA rollout, along with WCIU 26.5 Chicago. Whether it will be carried on channel 6.2 or 6.3 is unknown at this time.
  • KAZT-CD 7.x (36) Phoenix (KAZT-TV LLC) is experiencing technical difficulties that result in at best, a very weak signal, and at worst, no signal at all.
  • KTVP-LD 23.x Phoenix (HC2 LPTV Holdings Inc.) has replaced CRTV on channel 23.1 with BeINSports Xtra ñ, their Spanish-language broadcast. Think fútbol...mucho fútbol. Binge TV on channel 23.2 is now SBN, also on K18JL-D channel 22.3. Timeless TV on channel 23.3 is now ShopLC, also on channel 22.4. MMN on channel 23.4 is now Timeless TV, also on 22.5. Why the duplication? It looks like HC2 is getting ready to shut down K18JL-D, either permanently, or until they can find another channel for it, likely because KPNX 12.x is getting ready to begin testing on channel 18.
  • KPDF-CD 41.x (22) Phoenix (HC2 Station Group Inc.) has replaced CRTV on channel 41.5 with Good News TV, also seen on K18JL-D channel 22.1, and has replaced Timeless TV on channel 41.6 with GNTV Latino, also on channel 22.2.
  • KPVT-LD 2.x (27) Las Vegas NV (DNV Spectrum Holdigs) is airing American Movie Greats (AMG) on channel 2.6.
  • KNBX-CD 31.x (14) Las Vegas NV (HC2 LPTV Holdings LLC) has changed channel 31.2 to Renuevo, a Spanish-language Christian network.
  • K36NE-D 43.x Las Vegas NV (HC2 Station Group Inc.) has added another feed of BeIN Sports Xtra on channel 43.7, this one the ñ, or español, version that is in Phoenix on KTVP-LD 23.1.

Transactions

  • The FCC has granted the pro forma transfer of control creating an entity called Univision Holdings II Inc. Arizona stations currently owned by Univision include:
    • KTVW-DT 33.x Phoenix
    • KUVE-DT 46.x (34) Green Valley
    • KFPH-DT 13.x Flagstaff
    • KFTU-DT 3.x (36) Douglas
    • KFPH-CD 35.x Phoenix
    • KFTU-CD 34.x (18) Tucson
    • KUVE-CD 42.x (36) Tucson
    • KTVW-CD 6.x (27) Flagstaff/Doney Park
    • KDOS-LD 19.x Globe
    • KZOL-LP 34 Safford
    • K18NN-D Globe
    • K21GC Safford
  • Gray Television has agreed to acquire Quincy Media, which affects Tucson, where Gray owns KOLD-TV 13.x as Gray Television Licensee LLC and Quincy owns KVOA 4.x as KVOA License LLC. Since there are not enough independently-owned stations for Gray to have a duopoly, Gray will need to divest KVOA. Allen Media Broadcasting successfully bid to buy the divested stations, so KVOA will transfer from Quincy Media to Allen Media Broadcasting. The transactions have not yet been approved by the FCC. It is anticipated that translators K04QP-D Casas Adobes and K28OY-D Sierra Vista will also be included.
  • Gray Television has agreed to acquire Meredith Local Media, which affects Phoenix, where Meredith owns KTVK 3.x and KPHO-TV 5.x as KPHO Broadcasting Corporation; and Las Vegas NV, where Meredith owns KVVU-TV 5.x Henderson as KVVU Broadcasting Corporation. The transaction has not yet been approved by the FCC. It is anticipated that the following translators will also be included:
    • KTVK
      • K11LC-D Prescott
      • K14NA-D Globe/Miami
      • K15HY-D Williams-Ash Fork
      • K25MG-D Flagstaff
      • K28OA-D Cottonwood
    • KPHO-TV
      • K17MO-D Flagstaff
      • K27KS-D Globe/Miami
      • K29LM-D Cottonwood
      • K30JD-D Prescott
    • KVVU-TV
      • K28EU-D Laughlin NV
  • CCR-St. George IV LLC has agreed to sell its two St. George-area stations to Scripps: KDLU-LD 26.x St. George UT and KVBT-LD 41.x Santa Clara UT. The transaction has not yet been approved by the FCC.

Construction Permits and Special Temporary Authorizations (STAs) Granted

  • KBFY-LP 2 Yuma (Jeff Chang) has been granted an extension of its construction permit to flash cut to digital until January 10, 2022.
  • KGRX-LD 19.x Gila River Indian Community (Gila River Telecommunications Inc.) has been granted an extension of its construction permit for a new station until January 10, 2022.
  • KGRY-LD 28.x Gila River Indian Community (Gila River Telecommunications Inc.) has been granted an extension of its construction permit for a new station until January 10, 2022.
  • KPCE-LP 29 Tucson (Word of God Fellowship Inc.) has been granted an extension of its construction permit to flash cut to digital until January 10, 2022. The station expects to flash cut prior to the original July 13, 2021 expiration date, but filed the extension request in case any deliveries of materials or scheduling of tower crews gets delayed. If the station does not flash cut by July 13, then it must go silent until it is ready to broadcast in digital.
  • KKAX-LP 36 Hilltop (Tri-State Broadcasting LLC) has been granted an extension of its construction permit to flash cut to digital until January 10, 2022.
  • K03ID-D Flagstaff (One Ministries Inc.) has been granted an extension of its construction permit for a new station until January 10, 2022.
  • K23BJ Lake Havasu City (Tri-State Broadcasting LLC) has been granted an extension of its construction permit to flash cut to digital until January 10, 2022.
  • KVGA-LD 12.x Las Vegas NV (Digital Networks-Southwest LLC) requested and has been granted a construction permit to move broadcast facilities to the primary Black Mountain transmission site and to increase power. Technical specifications: Ch 12; TL 36° 0' 34" N, 115° 0' 23" W (Black Mtn); ERP 3 kW H directional; HAAT 316 m (1037 ft).
  • KMSQ-LD 15.x Mesquite NV (Tiny Tortoise Investments LLC) has been granted an extension of its construction permit for a new station until January 10, 2022.
  • K30PL-D 41.x Las Vegas NV (Enlace Christian Television Inc.) requested and has been granted a six-month extension of its Silence STA, now valid through October 31.
  • KDLU-LD 26.x (4) St. George UT (CCR St. George IV LLC) has been granted an extension of its CP to flash cut to digital until January 10, 2022.

Canceled, Dismissed, Expired, Expiring

  • The FCC has dismissed the request of K42IQ-D Flagstaff (Edge Spectrum Inc.) for an extension of its construction permit to move to an in-core channel and to broadcast in NextGen format. Because K42IQ-D is not a new digital LPTV/translator station, nor is it an analog LPTV/translator station converting to digital, it is not eligible to extend its construction permit. The station has been instructed to request tolling if it needs more time to construct its facilities.

NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0)

  • KAET 8.x Phoenix (Arizona Board of Regents for ASU) has requested a modification to its license to allow it to broadcast in NextGen format. KFPH-CD RF channel 35 will be the host station.

AZTV mystery solved.

Recent high winds apparently caused failure of the adapter that connects the transmission line to the antenna. Compounding the problem, however, is a nest of protected hawks on the tower. They cannot be disturbed, so the adapter cannot be repaired. The hawks will probably leave within 90 days, and AZTV has requested an STA to mount a directional antenna lower on the tower so they can continue broadcasting without disturbing the hawks. One the hawks leave, the broken adapter can be repaired.

KGUN 8.X has added 9.5 to their line=up......ION. Now ION is on KOLD and KGUN. Tucson has a collection of repeat stations.....it appears they are unwilling to try anything new. As for KWBA 58.X i don't know because I cannot receive it due to the mountains so I don't know what is there. Scripps bought ION a while back along with all their TV stations. Scripps owns KWBA and KGUN here in Tucson
