Arizona TV Station Update - June 2019

The Arizona TV Station Update covers news about TV stations viewable in my home state of Arizona. I claim no rights to the format, so if anyone wishes to report news about other regions, please contact the webmaster.

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

New Licenses

  • KEJR-LD 40.x Phoenix (HC2 Station Group Inc.) has requested a license to cover its displacement construction permit and to change towers within the South Mountain antenna farm. Technical specifications: Ch 32; TL 33° 19' 57" N, 112° 3' 59" W (South Mountain); ERP 15 kW directional (1° electrical beam tilt); HAAT 471 m.
  • KTVP-LD 23.x Phoenix (HC2 LPTV Holdings Inc.) has requested a license to cover its displacement construction permit and to change towers within the South Mountain antenna farm. Technical specifications: Ch 23; TL 33° 19' 57" N, 112° 3' 59" W (South Mountain); ERP 15 kW directional (1° electrical beam tilt); HAAT 471 m.
  • K18JL-D 22.x Phoenix (HC2 LPTV Holdings Inc.) has requested a license to cover its construction permit to change towers within the South Mountain antenna farm. Technical specifications: Ch 23; TL 33° 19' 57" N, 112° 3' 59" W (South Mtn.); ERP 15 kW directional (1° electrical beam tilt); HAAT 442 m.

Programming Changes

  • KEJR-LD 40.x (32) Phoenix (HC2 Station Group Inc.) has dropped its duplication of Azteca America on channel 40.2 and now has only one subchannel, 40.1, on which it airs Azteca America.
  • KTVP-LD 23.x Phoenix (HC2 LPTV Holdings Inc.) has returned to air. It now identifies to PSIP as channel 23, instead of channel 22, as before. Infomercials air on channel 23.1, and channel 23.2 airs either infomercials, or no programming.

Construction Permits and Special Temporary Authorization (STA) Requests Granted

  • KPHO-TV 5.x (17) Phoenix (Meredith Corporation) has been granted a construction permit to maximize facilities, raising the location of the transmitting antenna to the top of the tower and switching from a directional antenna to a omni-directional antenna. The application was filed in May 2012. Technical specifications: Ch 17; TL 33-20-2 N, 112-3-40 W (South Mtn.); ERP 1000 kW non-directional; HAAT 530 m.
  • KESE-LP 35 Yuma (NPG of Yuma-El Centro LLC) requested and has been granted an engineering STA to operate at reduced power due to equipment failure. The system is operating at 55% of maximum power, or at 4.4 kW instead of the authorized 8 kW.

Construction Permits and STA Requests Requested

  • K28MO-D Gila River Indian Co (Gila River Telecommunications Inc.) has responded to the FCC's instructions that Gila River resolve interference to KCOS-LP or have its application dismissed. The response provides further evidence that KCOS-LP is not currently broadcasting, and so, should have its license canceled so that the K28MO-D application can be granted. According to past Arizona Station Updates, KCOS-LP has not broadcast since August 2008.
  • KNTL-LP 47 Laughlin NV (Entravision Holdings LLC) has requested an extension of its Silence STA in order to finish its conversion to digital operations on channel 35.

Spectrum Repack

  • With the transition of KEJR-LD from channel 40 to channel 32, the 600 MHz band has now been cleared in the Phoenix metro area.

With KASW's ATSC 1.0 version of 61.1 going to KSAZ's RF, so that KASW can go 3.0, does that mean they will squeeze Decades in 45.x, or will they get rid of the SD simulcast of 10.2 on KUTP's RF to fit Decades?

KASW replaced Decades on ch 61.2 with HSN some time ago, meaning that only its CW program on 61.1 is unique to the market. The agreement between KASW and KSAZ seems to suggest to me that only CW programming will move over to KSAZ's signal; the other subchannels will cease.

I understand that, but between 10.1 and 61.1's HD feeds, and 10.3 and 10.4 in 16:9 1080i, there will be no room for Decades on 10.5 using KSAZ's RF unless KASW accepts a lower bit stream.

KNXV already messed up their subchannels by making them 4:3 SD to make room for Court TV since they piggyback Escape for KFPH. That's makes them harder to watch.

I noticed that K14RK-D has shuffled their subchannels...again. 38.2 is now airing "Lit Life TV," about the cannabis lifestyle. 38.3 is now Spanish religious "Alpha." "IZ Videos" is completely gone.

Also, KPHE-LD 44.5 is showing Jewelry TV, exactly like 44.4.

One more thing: I searched for the Lit Life TV website, and what I found looks like something someone came up while high. How fitting!

TVinAZ - Just realized where you were going with Decades. Fox has signed an agreement with Weigel to carry Decades beginning this sometime this quarter (between now and 9/30). I have no idea what the local O&O is going to do, but I do suspect that it's going onto KUTP vc 45 rf 26.

Comet returned to Las Vegas Thursday afternoon, this go-round on KVCW 33.5, a new sub-channel for the station. Comet was dropped from KHSV 21.3 several months ago, and that sub-channel was removed. A replacement is expected for 21.3 in the near future, perhaps DABL from CBS.

Several weekend changes to the Vegas OTA dial. KHDF 19.3 is now OnTV4U. KGNG 26.2 is TeleAntenna. KGNG 26.4 is BUZZR. KGNG 26.10 remains an audio service of InfoWars, but may be switching to RTV soon. HOT, KNBX 31.4, is expected to return to the air this week once a new server is up and running for the mini-network.
