Arizona TV Station Update - August/September 2015

Due to several unforeseen events, the August update could not be published. This update covers news from both August and September.

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

New licenses

  • KYUM-LP 2 Yuma (Centro Cristiana Vida Abundante, Inc.) requested and was granted a license to cover its flash cut to digital. The license application originally specified channel 2, its analog channel, but was corrected to specify channel 15. Technical specifications: Ch 15; TL 32° 40' 21" N, 114° 20' 10" W (Telegraph Pass); ERP 1.8 kW directional; HAAT 383 m.

Programming changes

  • KTVW-DT 33.x Phoenix (KTVW License Partnership, G.P.) has added Bounce TV on channel 33.4. Bounce TV continues to air on channel 45.3. It is expected that KDOS-LD in Globe also has the new subchannel.
  • KUTP 45.x (26) Phoenix (Fox Television Stations, Inc.) is scheduled to replace the KSAZ-TV SD simulcast on channel 10.2 with the Heroes & Icons diginet on October 1.
  • KASW 61.x (49) Phoenix (Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc.) is scheduled to add Decades TV on channel 61.2 on October 1. Nexstar does not generally like to multiplex its stations' signals, so this is a surprise and makes one wonder if the station is being controlled by Meredith Corporation. It also makes onewonder what will happen if Nexstar succeeds in wooing Media General, which is currently planning to merge with Meredith.
  • K18JL-D 25.x Phoenix (Mako Communications LLC) has switched programming on channel 25.1 from AFTV to 3ABN Proclaim!, yet still under the label GNTV2.
  • KFPB-LD 50.x Globe (Globe LPTV LLC) no longer airs TeleRomántica programming on channel 50.3, replacing it with a blue screen. Meanwhile, infomercials have returned to channel 50.6, first as audio only, and now with video as well.
  • K23FZ Camp Verde (The Camp Verde TV Club) has resumed programming, airing AFTV.
  • K25MK-D Camp Verde (The Camp Verde TV Club) is silent.
  • K31LZ Camp Verde (The Camp Verde TV Club) is silent.
  • K47IK Camp Verde (The Camp Verde TV Club) is silent.
  • KNAZ-TV 2.x (22) Flagstaff (Multimedia Holdings Corporation) is now broadcasting in 1080i HD. It had been 480i SD.
  • KTVW-CD 6.x (27) Flagstaff (KTVW License Partnership, G.P.) has added a simulcast of KFPH-DT 13.1 Flagstaff on channel 6.2.
  • K42IQ-D Flagstaff (EICB-TV East, LLC) is operational, but is not sending out any programming or broadcast information.
  • K50HU-D 5.x Flagstaff (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation) is silent.
  • Multiple sources have reported that Airbox does offer their service to the public in Phoenix. Their website has information about the receivers and programming packages offered. Apparently, Radio Shack carries the receivers (assuming one can find a Radio Shack anymore.)
  • KNTV 13.x Las Vegas NV (Journal Broadcast Corporation) has announced that they will replace the Heroes & Icons diginet with Grit on channel 13.3 in January 2016.
  • MundoFox has rebranded as MundoMax, following Fox terminating its partnership in the joint venture.

Transactions

  • Media General has announced its intention to acquire Meredith Corporation, forming Meredith Media General. If the FCC approves, the following Meredith television stations viewable in Arizona would come under control of Media General:
    • KTVK 3.x (24) Phoenix (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • KPHO 5.x (17) Phoenix (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K11LC-D 3.x Prescott (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K14NA-D 3.x Globe/Miami (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K15HY Williams (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation) (analog - KTVK)
    • K25MG-D 3.x Flagstaff (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K27KS-D 5.x Globe/Miami (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K30JD-D 5.x Prescott (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K38AC-D 3.x Cottonwood (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K40AD-D 5.x Cottonwood (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K50HU-D 5.x Flagstaff (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation)
    • KVVU-TV 5.x (9) Henderson NV (KVVU Broadcasting Corporation)
    • K28EU-D 5.x Laughlin NV (KVVU Broadcasting Corporation)
  • And the following Media General station would become part of the new group:
    • K30GL Many Farms (Lin of Colorado, LLC)
  • KVMY 21.x (2) Las Vegas NV (Southern Nevada Communications Company) has amended its Assignment of License application to include unredacted copies of the Asset Purchase Agreement and Disclosure Statement concerning its transfer to Channel 33, Inc. as a precursor to its proposed sale to Howard Stirk Holdings. It has also added a copy of the tower and studio lease agreements with Sinclair.
  • KVCW 33.x (29) Las Vegas NV (Channel 33 Inc.) has filed for an extension of consummation in its pro-forma assignment to KUPN Licensee, LLC. The transaction is ready to consummate but needs to occur in conjunction with the transfer of KVMY to Channel 33, Inc. prior to its sale to Howard Stirk Holdings. The KVMY transfer is still pending FCC approval.

Morning finds Buzzr TV on channel 45.3, replacing Bounce. Heroes & Icons has not yet made its debut, nor has Decades TV.

2. On Thursday, October 1 2015, 19:36 by Justin Hill

WBAY-TV 2-3 has aborted their plans to debut the Decades subchannel, so now that channel has defaulted to its non-PSIP designation 23.5.

The H&I website now reports that the diginet will debut in Phoenix on November 1. And so we wait...

4. On Friday, October 2 2015, 20:24 by TVinAZ

Just after 5pm on Friday 10/2 and still no 61.2. And no, KASW is no longer under Meredith control. Nexstar actually runs Bounce TV in several markets and have Weigel diginets in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.

The engineers that are in charge of the equipment here in Phoenix need to be put out to pasture. Call Nexstar and complain loudly. I would have expected this from the Faux station, not having their scrambled brains in working order. Any station that runs a subchannel with their SD on it for 5 years really does not have it together. Question, why is it that the owners of the low power stations or the stations that air Spanish language programming are so much better at running them?
Phone number for Nexstar is: 972-373-8800 and they are headquarted in Irving Texas.

Just got word from KASW:

Your PHX CW6 Hi David. The tentative launch date for Decades is Nov. 1. Hope this helps!

7. On Friday, October 9 2015, 23:41 by Tracy Flood

I'm still waiting for a station, ANY station in the Orlando/Daytona Beach/Melbourne DMA to pick up Decades. We have all the others (This TV, Get TV, Movies!, Cozi TV, Antenna TV, Retro TV, Me-TV, Bounce TV, Grit TV, Escape TV, Heroes & Icons, Laff TV, Buzzr, Heartland, Qubo, and ION Life), c'mon, Orlando, give us Decades, OK?

Still no sign of Decades on 61.2 in Phoenix, AZ. Emails to the station inquiring about the status of 61.2 are not being answered by the station.

NewsMax launched Wednesday 21 Oct on Las Vegas KGNG 47.8. This displaced the simulcast of The Walk, leaving that network only on KNBX 31.2 in Las Vegas.

And now the Decades TV website puts the launch date in KASW at 10/28 - this Wednesday.

The Las Vegas dial, which serves a small portion of Arizona, is seeing some changes. KGNG 47.2 has morphed from religious AVIVA to "Horror" with some scary flicks. It looks like this is only for the Halloween week. Rev'n has begun a simulcast with KGNG 47.6 being the news channel, which pushes PBJ off the dial, for now. Rev'n continues on KEGS 30.4. Other changes are promised and expected soon, including part of The Work schedule supplementing the existing schedule of Movies+ on KGNG 47.5.

As a surprise, KEEN-17 aired a Friday night NBC tape delayed football match between USC and Norte Dame. After some checking, this is the result of LeSea, owner of KEEN, working out a deal with NBC to cover Norte Dame football. Yet, it seemed strange to see NBC on-air talent, logos, and graphics on a religious station, even though they skipped the halftime show.. I even spotted a "stay tuned for Saturday Night Live" graphic.

K41IO-41 has been spotty recently, not always making it to air. But they can't compete with KMCC-34's lackluster Henderson repeater that spends more time off-air than on. Even Revenue Frontier, KLSV 50.2, spent part of yesterday in hiding. Of course History Of Television has had the usual amount of blank screen freeze ups as the server stutters through the schedule on KNBX 31.4.

KGNG 47.2 Las Vegas has a PSIP of "Horror", although programming for that genre was only spotted very briefly about a week ago. Since then programming from AVIVA has been aired. But that is about to change, as 47.2 will soon host BUZZR, the home of mostly off-net game shows.

I see the previous comment about Decades launching on 61.2 in Phoenix on 10/28/15. As of today, 10/30/15, no signs of life on 61.2. Still just picking up 61.1 only. We'll see what November 1st turns up.

15. On Sunday, November 1 2015, 17:36 by RICHARD Dunn

NOVEMBER 1st no Decades or Heroes and Icons Phoenix Needs to get it together.

16. On Sunday, November 1 2015, 18:57 by Bleen Gloob

I said it on Oct. 2. See comment above. The airwaves belong to the public and these people are schlepps. Complain to the FCC about them. Problem is, its AridOzona......dead last in education. You can reach the FCC: Phone: 1-888-225-5322
TTY: 1-888-835-5322
Videophone: 1-844-432-2275
Fax: 1-866-418-0232

17. On Monday, November 2 2015, 19:35 by Tim

I concur with RICHARD Dunn. No changes in OTA lineups post November 1st. I give up. Not gonna bother looking for them anymore. To hell with 'em.

18. On Thursday, November 5 2015, 21:24 by Richard Dunn
