Arizona TV Station Update - June 2014

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

Programming changes

  • KPHE-LD 44.x Phoenix (Lotus TV of Phoenix, LLC) has added late-night infomercial programming on 44.1 and 44.2 after source station XEWH 6 Hermosillo SON goes off the air. The station has rebranded the subchannels as SíTV.

Transactions

  • KTVK 3.x (24) Phoenix (Sander Operating Co. II) has been approved to transfer ownership of the station to KPHO Broadcasting Corporation and the sale has been consummated. The following KTVK and KASW translators are also included:
    • K11LC-D Prescott (KTVK)
    • K38AI-D Cottonwood (KTVK)
    • K15HY Williams-Ash Fork (KTVK)
    • K25MG-D Flagstaff (KTVK)
    • K14NA-D Globe & Miami(KTVK)
    • K34EE-D Prescott-Cottonwood (KASW)
    • K41JE Williams-Ash Fork (KASW)
  • KASW 61.x (49) Phoenix (Sander Operating Co. II) has been approved to transfer ownership of the station to SagamoreHill of Phoenix Licenses, LLC. The sale has been consummated.

Construction permits and Special Temporary Authorizations granted

  • K14KK-D 8.x Flagstaff (Arizona Board of Regents for ASU) has been granted a construction permit to increase power from 0.1 kW to 0.63 kW. Technical specifications: Ch 14; TL 35-14-26 N, 111-35-48 W (Mt. Eldon TV Hill site); ERP 0.63 kW directional; HAAT 585 m.

Construction permits and Special Temporary Authorizations requested

  • KTVP-LD 22.x Phoenix (Mako Communications, LLC) has requested a displacement change to channel 25, presumably due to excessive interference from KNAZ-TV in Flagstaff. I guess interference from co-channel KMSB (25) Tucson and from adjacent Phoenix channels KTVK (24) and KUTP (26) is expected to be less of a problem. If the channel change is approved, KTVP will almost certainly abandon its construction permit to increase power from 5 kW to 15 kW on channel 22, and it's safe to say that they gave up on moving to channel 14 after the FCC offered it to KPPX if they would abandon channel 51. And no, despite the change in community of license, the station is not planning a move to Las Vegas - that was a typo. Technical specifications: Ch 25; TL 33-19-58 N, 112-3-59 W (South Mountain); ERP 5 kW directional; HAAT 460 m.

July has been a rough month for Las Vegas LPTV-ers. KHDF 19.2, 19.3, and 19.3 is stuck on a computer 'startup" graphic, instead of their usual "for lease" billboard. KHMP-18 spent days with strong signal but no programming. That seems to have been corrected, and all four sub-channels are back to their normal. My signal for KGNG-47 dropped from a normal 78 to as lows as 37, preventing display on my main tv and causing my DVR to not always get a reliable signal to record. No other stations dropped for me, so I'm not sure it's antenna orientation. Although Vegas did have some good winds of late.

KGNG 47.2, usually Aviva, has been airing public domain cartoons and informercials for several weeks. Aviva is siad to be having issues at their end. While the Family Channel is rumored to be on KGNG 47.6, the station continues to pump out a slate of movies from a local server, much like their Movies+ on 47.5. No specific ID, but only a generic KGNG-47 has been spotted. My suggestion of Sin City Cinema, or Cinema Six, has gone un-noticed.

Full power KMCC-34 lost The Cool from their .2 sub several weeks ago. It was restored yesterday, along with a simulcast of the music video network on 34.3..Would this be timed for the appearance of Escape and/or Grit on August 18th? Or perhaps the .3 will allow Weather Nation two years after it was announced that KMCC was to be an affiliate.

Escape and Grit, mentioned above, may make it to Vegas for their national launch on the 18th of August. Univision O&O's are affiliates in many markets, as well as some Entravision stations. Entravision's KINC-15 Vegas might be home to either, or both, new networks. They could even move LATV from 15.2 to their little sister KELV 27.2 to allow the new networks access to a full power berth on KINC. But this is all speculation. .

In Las Vegas, LPTV KGNG 47.2 yieled their cartoon and infomercial fest of late for a local launch of McCasa Broadcast Network this week. This is an English language network aimed at Latinos. Programming includes titles such as Cisco Kid, Acapulco Heat, Loco Comedy Jam, Barrio Beats, Cinematic Movies, and a whole lot more. However, KGNG seems to have assigned too few bits to the sub-channel for the network.
